Featured Mill
  • Nixey's Mill, Brill, Buckinghamshire
This post mill - one of the most ancient survivors in the country - was the subject of extensive repairs during the first half of 2009. A boldly-carved date on a timber inside the mill body suggests that the mill was erected, or perhaps rebuilt, in the 1680s, and this has recently been confirmed by tree-ring analysis or dendrochronology.

Photographs and documents available at the Mills Archive illustrate the decay and eventual repair of the mill after it ceased to function in the 1920s, and describe the contributions to the preservation effort made by well-known mill people such as Stanley Freese and Rex Wailes.

    • Frank W Gregory (1917-1998)
Frank's interest in mills began as a boy when, at an early age, he accompanied his father on car journeys around Sussex.

Born and bred in Brighton, Frank developed a reputation as an avid photographer, researcher and collector of material relating to every type of mill. His enthusiasm for the repair of mills was infectious and directly contributed to the preservation of several Sussex examples such as Park Mill at Bateman's, Nutley post mill and Shipley smock mill.

The Mills Archive's current project, with help from an expert group based on the Sussex Mills Group, involves the digitisation and cataloguing of 40,000 items from Frank's collection, which he left to the Weald and Downland Open Air Museum at Singleton.
