About The Mills Archive > Introduction

We are run by the Mills Archive Trust

The Trust is an educational charity registered under English law (Registration No 1091534). We are a voluntary organisation relying on private donations and managed by a small group of trustees, who freely give their time:
  • Mr M Harverson (Appointed by SPAB Mills Section)
  • Mrs MM Cookson (Owner of a Foundation Collection)
  • Mr JK Major (Owner of a Foundation Collection)
  • Mr A Stoyel (Owner of a Foundation Collection)
  • Mr D Stidder
  • Dr RF Cookson (Chairman)

The seventh position is vacant and may be filled by someone from the archives or the museums sector

We aim to

  • Set up & maintain a permanent record repository for historical and contemporary material on traditional mills and milling
  • Ensure the records are properly cared for in an appropriate environment and provide such conservation as may be required
  • Facilitate public inspection of the records and encourage their use in research and learning
  • Use information technology to allow users both to examine material remotely and to add new relevant information on-line
  • Comply with the appropriate standards for archives so far as is practicable with current resources

Our Subject Area

  • Our catalogue will contain many thousands of digital images and other information relating to traditional mills and milling
  • Traditional mills include mills and similar structures that are or were powered by wind, water, muscle or other sources
  • Milling includes millwrighting and the place of the mill in social as well as technological and architectural history

Our Standards

Our collections policy is based on the Historical Manuscripts Commission's Standard for Record Repositories. In addition, the physical care of the Archive will accord as closely as possible with BS 5454 2000. This British Standard covers matters such as the site and structure of the repository, its security, the control of its internal environment, and methods of storage and display.

Our Policy

Reflects the policy of The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings; by keeping careful historical records of the structure and function of individual mills we provide the historical background to inform and encourage sensitive and appropriate preservation of our milling heritage, both architectural and technological. In accordance with the wills of the owners of Foundation Collections, every attempt will be made to maintain the archival integrity of these collections when donated.
