The Mill Index
The main focus of the Mills Archive
is traditional mills, ie those powered by wind, water and
muscle power. We also collect material on the advent
of newer sources of power such as steam and fossil fuels.
You will find photographic and documentary material, initially
from the British Isles, but also in time from Continental
Europe, N America and the rest of the world.
Our Mill Index is the main index of the Archive and contains
details of some 10,000 mills. The index was originally based on the
databases assembled by Tony Bryan and the Mills Research
Group. This has been extended and developed as we cover regions in depth. We are aware that there are omissions and errors
in
the Mill Index and welcome feedback suggesting specific improvements.
To the extent that we have the information, each mill is
described by
- Location (parish, district or town, county and country)
- National Grid Reference (UK mills)
- Mill name, including any alternative names
- River where applicable
- Earliest & latest dates
- Power Source
- Type (eg post mill, undershot wheel)
- Purpose (eg cereal milling);for
