The
People Index
Social history is an important feature of the Archive. Mill
enthusiasts and family historians have collaborated to give
us many valuable photographs and documents. You can search
our databases to find information on millers; millwrights,
mill owners, engineers and others with an involvement in milling
Our People Index is a rapidly growing database that we use
to catalogue any Archive records we hold that relate to millers,
millwrights etc. Whenever we add to our catalogue a new record
containing significant information about someone with a milling
connection, we add that person to the Index. The Index is
therefore growing rapidly as more records are catalogued.
If a person is not mentioned there, you can search Mary Yoward's
Database of Millers & Millwrights, which she has assembled
over some 20 years and contains more than 30000 entries giving
the person’s name and trade, gender, place and county
as well as notes of interest and the source of the information
(eg a directory, census or other record). Trades mentioned
include apprentice, baker, brewer, corn merchant, farmer,
mealman and mill owner as well as many types of miller and
other related trades.
