June 2002 - Mills Archive Online

The UK's Heritage Lottery Fund has approved a substantial grant to start our digital catalogue with almost 3000 images of mills in the UK counties of Dorset and Nottinghamshire. These images are currently held, largely uncatalogued, in six major collections. Our collections also contain much non-UK material and we hope to encourage international funding to support the cataloguing of those elements.

Click here for more detail about this project and how you can get involved or be kept informed. Alternatively you can request to be included on our email list for future updates.

Our comprehensive catalogue of holdings will be freely available by the Internet to mill researchers around the world. This digital catalogue will provide detailed images of individual records (eg photographs, printed documents, drawings, field notes) held not only at The Mills Archive but also in other collaborating archives. In time The Mills Archive will become a valuable resource for mills and milling around the world as well as the major information source on UK mills.

The Mills Archive wishes to contact repositories of mill-related material in other countries to discuss common standards and share data so that a single search will produce valid results from archives worldwide, pointing users to relevant material in each archive.

A significant proportion of our holdings relates to mills in European countries, North America, and the rest of the world. The images shown are just two of thousands we hold - we need help to make them more widely available!

Click on the images to get a closer view!. We intend to provide images of even higher quality through our digital catalogue.
