Draper’s Mill is the sole survivor of several windmills that once stood in and around Margate. The Grade II* listed smock mill was built in 1845 by John Holman of Canterbury, a well-known millwright. Octagonal in plan, it has a brick base and black-tarred weatherboarding and cap. Unlike many other mills, Draper’s is fortunate to have its original outbuildings still standing, including a workshop and a cart shed which houses a 19th century miller’s cart. The old bakery survives next to the mill as a private residence.

The story of the mill’s working life and restoration can be followed using the links on this page.

The material assembled during the Kent Millers’ Tales Project is an unparalleled archival collection, containing a unique set of correspondence, illustrations and technical details relating to Draper’s Mill.
