Several local archives in Kent hold collections of material relating to mills. The areas of the county covered by each archives service are shown on this map. The largest area of Kent, including the Isle of Sheppey, is covered by the Centre for Kentish Studies, located at Maidstone. The East Kent Archives Centre at Whitfield near Dover covers the eastern coastal areas. The Medway Archives & Local Studies Centre, located at Strood, covers the Medway area. Canterbury district is covered by the Canterbury Cathedral Archives, located in the heart of the city. Also in Canterbury is the Templeman Library, located at the University of Kent. Its Special Collections Library houses a significant collection of mill material, much of it contributed by Donald W. Muggeridge and the late C. P. Davies. Elements of the Muggeridge Collection are available on the Library's website, and can be inspected by appointment with the librarian. Other areas to the west of the county, originally part of Kent, are covered by Bromley Public Library (Archives Section and Bexley Local Studies and Archives Centre. Outside the county, The Mills Archive in Reading holds several large collections of material relating to Kentish mills. Much of this material has been digitised as part of the Millers' Tales Project. Other elements of the collections can be inspected by prior appointment at the Mills Archive's Library and Research Room in Reading. |
