An update on my progress to photograph and document/research
the Mills of Southern Africa to date is as follows:
Located - 4 Windmills; 183 Watermills (41 Extinct) (14 Operating/Working),
(10 on Wine Estates), (10 situated near to Boer War / Battle
sites) and 3 Horsemills
A case of 3 steps forward and 1 backwards. Each new field
trip brings out more and more of them. Ventures to follow
my Book and Guide will be Mill Tours and in 2008, possibly
an International Symposia of the International Monological
Society (TIMS) to be held in Cape Town, South Africa.
An article will appear in the August edition of the South
African Airways In-flight magazine 'Sawubona' with a brief
introduction of these old mills in South Africa. As well another
article shall follow in Farmers Weekly, about a mill currently
being restored on the farm 'Koelfontein' near Prince Alfred's
Hamlet in the Western Cape. This is one of 2 mills that are
being restored by Will van der Schaaf, who heard me on the
radio last year and I have been able to put him in touch with
the mill owners in question. Will is from Holland and has
the same love of Watermills that I have but he has the skills
to restore the wooden bits, being a Master Carpenter. He has
todate restored 3 Watermill Wheels.
My mill web site is up and will be the first virtual Mill
Tour to appear on the web.
I request all vistors to this site to contact me and
share there interest in our Mills of Southern Africa.
Thank you.
